For many years I have enjoyed Christian Science, the Comforter that Christ Jesus promised us, and our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, revealed to us.

During the first World War, I was living in a desert town where most of the doctors had been called to the armed forces. When a neighbor appeared to be passing on and was unable to have the services of a doctor, I attempted to do what I could to console the family. The despondent husband handed me a book, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and asked me to read. I was not familiar with this treatment, but started to read aloud to calm his fears. I became so engrossed in the chapter on Prayer that I became oblivious to my surroundings and continued to read for about thirty minutes: to my surprise the woman was completely healed and expressed her gratitude.

I borrowed the book and read it through, but did not go farther in my study until some months later, when my little daughter ran a large, rusty nail through her foot. In spite of all the material remedies I applied she grew worse, until the foot was twice its normal size and the pain was severe. In desperation I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner, who came to see me. The healing was complete at the end of two hours, when my daughter put on her shoe and went out to play with the children.
