On Being Specific

In Christian Science, as in any human endeavor, it is often helpful for one to approach a given problem with an absolute and specific realization of the truth. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has stated in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 219): "In mathematics, we do not multiply when we should subtract, and then say the product is correct. No more can we say in Science that muscles give strength, that nerves give pain or pleasure, or that matter governs, and then expect that the result will be harmony." In advancing toward a higher degree of efficiency in the handling of error both for ourselves and for others, it is helpful to realize that many times a specific claim of error calls for a specific truth with which to deny its supposed reality. If challenged specifically, error cannot remain hidden but must come forth to be annihilated.

Matter is an alias for mortal mind. Indeed, mortal mind would attempt to project its fictitious presence with varied and at times very convincing aliases, and it may require definite and specific repudiation before it is completely and permanently put down.

What presents itself to thought is either right or wrong, true or false, correct or incorrect, and if we would progress in demonstration we must deal with situations as specifically and use what the Bible and our Leader have given us until unfoldment reveals the right idea with which to dispel the mortal mind presentment.
