Recently, while I was working...

Recently, while I was working to solve a problem, the thought came to me that it had been about nineteen years since Christian Science was first presented to me. Then came to mind what Mrs. Eddy says on page 495 of Science and Health: "Truth casts out error now as surely as it did nineteen centuries ago." In a flash I could see that the same Truth was right here to heal now, as effectively as nineteen years or nineteen centuries ago, just as the multiplication table was as available and demonstrable then as it is now; and that the truth which Jesus proved then was present now for me to realize and use. During these years, Christian Science has been a beacon light to me—enlightening, warning, and standing guard.

Two months before our baby girl, the third one of our family, was born, it appeared questionable whether either of us would survive. A doctor and an osteopath had done all they said could be done. Then a copy of Science and Health was lent to me by a friend, and work was taken up in Christian Science. The birth was almost painless, with no complications of any kind, and the child was normal in every way. Although the medical doctor was present at the time of birth, as required by law, no medicine was used in any way after I turned to Christian Science.

After an automobile accident, a few years ago, I woke up to find myself in a hospital. The head injury I had sustained would, it was said, in itself prove fatal. Part of my body seemed paralyzed. Both legs were broken, and one was so badly crushed that the surgeon, who was called before the family could be reached, said it would need to be amputated, but that, as long as there was no possible chance of my living, the best they could do was to try to make me comfortable. Let me say that at no time was any medicine given me, and the hospital authorities very kindly allowed our family to be left alone, even refusing to let anyone in to see me except the practitioner and one Christian Science friend, who came in each day to read to me. One day, at the end of two weeks, the head bandage fell off. When a nurse came in the room, she was astonished to find a mere hair-line half an inch long as the only evidence of a wound, and she called in the supervisor to examine it. Neither could give an explanation; it was unbelievable to them.
