I am a returned soldier from overseas, having been in the campaigns of Casablanca, Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy. I engaged in four amphibious landings and was overseas twenty months in all. I mention this because during this time I missed reading the Lesson-Sermon on only ten days. I feel that the Lessons were the source of the wonderful protection which I received, and I wish to express my gratitude for them.

I should like to relate one experience which occurred while I was serving in the Third Infantry Division on the Anzio beachhead. This division of the United States Army is called the "Rock of the Marne," as it was the Third Infantry Division that stopped the Germans on the Marne during the first World War, an experience which many regarded as the "miracle of the Marne."

At the time I refer to we had been experiencing nightly attacks by the enemy, who greatly outnumbered us, and we had very little ammunition left. All day long I studied, even reviewing several Lesson-Sermons. I felt I was able to do very clear work because I had been studying faithfully. I knew the situation was so desperate from a human sense that only God could turn such an attack. As I asked His help again that night, I was led to order the use of mortar flares that we had lying in a pile and had had no use for. I gave the order to hold all fire, and when the Germans attacked we lighted the sky with the flares. The Germans were caught in the open fields, and when the flares lighted the skies they turned and ran back to their own lines without our having to fire a shot.
