Petersburg, Virginia (First Church).

First Church of Christ, Scientist, Petersburg, was dedicated on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, and a history of the church was read at the dedicatory service.

In September, 1913, a small group of Christian Scientists met in a residence on Hinton Street. Interest increased in the community, and in April, 1914, a Christian Science Society was organized. In May, 1917, it was necessary to have a larger meeting place, and a move was made to the Roper Building, on the corner of Sycamore and Tabb Streets. Here Wednesday evening meetings were begun, and a Sunday school and a Reading Room were established.

In June, 1920, the society moved to 205 South Sycamore Street, and these quarters were occupied until May, 1922, when the present building at 225 South Adams Street was purchased. In 1927 the society became First Church of Christ, Scientist, Petersburg.—The Progress-Index.
