Sufficient Grace

Three times in prayer Paul sought release
From the harsh thorn of pain
Pricking the ease of the flesh.
Three times
He sought surcease from buffetings
Of Satan's messenger, material sense—
Thrust rudely on the glorying
Of heaven's revealings—
Seeking to reverse
The peace of scientific demonstration.
Then answering his prayer there came
The healing comfort of the Christ:
My grace is sufficient for thee,
My strength made perfect in weakness.

God's grace is sufficient for me.
I find His strength in my weakness.
Each day, each hour, with heaven's aid,
I too can overcome the thorn of pain,
Can scorn the buffetings of mortal sense,
And joy in all-sufficient grace,
Confide in Life and Truth and Love,
Until I rest assured there is no flesh,
No thorn, nor Satan's messenger,
Nor any unkind buffetings,
And feel the comfort of the Christ,
Forever near.

Each day, each hour,
God's grace is sufficient for me.
