"A truer sense of Love"

Love has various definitions. Jesus gave to the world the true sense of love, the right concept of God as Love. Healing the sick, cleansing the sinful, and raising the dead, he demonstrated the power of Love in behalf of mortals. His work, together with his declaration, "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work," proves irrefutably that God is divine Principle, Love.

On page 19 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," its author, Mary Baker Eddy, writes, "Jesus aided in reconciling man to God by giving man a truer sense of Love, the divine Principle of Jesus' teachings, and this truer sense of Love redeems man from the law of matter, sin, and death by the law of Spirit,—the law of divine Love." It is notable that Mrs. Eddy places the achieving of redemption on the basis of the right sense of Love. Material sense subjects mortals to the law of matter, sin, and death; spiritual sense redeems man from this false law and saves him through spiritual law, "the law of divine Love."

A young woman who had been of a religious nature all her life, and who had prayed daily from young childhood, found that she was incapable of realizing her heart's desire. She had endeavored to serve God, and she longed to bring real happiness into the lives of others, but the evidences of failure which she continually encountered confused and baffled her. Finally a distressing illness overtook her and she was pronounced incurable. When her prayers seemed unavailing, and confusion overwhelmed her, she turned in despair from a God who, she thought, could afflict her two helpless children by taking their mother from them. For a time, to her distorted sense, she was without "hope, and without God in the world."
