In the Christian Science textbook...

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says (p. 1), "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." In my own experience, the absolute truth of this statement has been proved many times.

Eight years ago, after I had had more than a year of severe illness, an eminent specialist made a series of examinations, took a number of X rays, and after careful study reported that complicated physical conditions prevented me from receiving permanent relief from the gallstone and gall bladder disorder that was present, and that I should adjust my life to one of semi-invalidism.

Upon leaving this doctor's office I became almost hysterical, and so desperate that I declared death would be preferable to such a restricted and inactive life. In that moment of dire extremity, the fact burst upon my consciousness that God could save me, would save me, if I prayed and turned unreservedly to Him.
