Watch, Listen, and Follow

The world crisis of today is imposing a greater measure of self-discipline on individuals and nations than ever before in the history of civilization, and yet the two greatest leaders the world has ever known, Christ Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy, voluntarily and consistently expressed natural simplicity and self-immolation. It may be assumed that every active student of Christian Science is striving to follow their example in this call to arms proportionately as he recognizes the need for purification and a deeper consecration to good.

On the cover of the Christian Science Sentinel are inscribed these words of Jesus: "What I say unto you I say unto all. Watch." To watch is to embody trustworthiness and devotion to duty; to be continuously on guard. Thoughtful daily study of the Bible, together with the Christian Science textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, prepares us to stand at our individual watching posts in the vast army of Christian Science workers. The call to arms is urgent and insistent. We must, as a loved hymn says, "put on the whole armor of pure consecration." and go to our posts equipped for victory.

Coupled with watching is the act of listening. A sentinel who is a good listener quickly becomes aware of the approach of an enemy. Knowing the password, he quickly detects any false or counterfeit sound. At the first sign of the enemy's nearness, the alert watcher gives the alarm, and every soldier is instantly prepared to repel him.
