Among the Churches

Salem, Oregon (First Church).—Following the custom among Christian Science churches of dedicating their church buildings only after they are fully paid for, First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Salem, dedicated its structure on Sunday, December 29, 1940. In addition to the morning and evening services, there was an extra service in the afternoon, in order that all the regular attendants and the general public might have opportunity to attend the dedicatory services.

The Salem church, while a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, is self-governed, electing its officers and Readers from its membership.

There is a note of historical interest in the fact that the first Christian Science church to be built in Oregon was built in Salem in 1902.

In 1923, a charter member of the local church made a gift to the church of the lot on which the present structure stands. The original church building was moved across the street and incorporated into the new building, and constitutes the Sunday school room, porch, and entrance on the Liberty Street side. The present building was completed in 1925.—Statesman.
