Demonstration

It is recorded that when Solomon became king of Israel he prayed, "Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad." The answer of the Lord was: "Behold, I have done according to thy words. . . . And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour."

In the New Testament there is a passage which is similar in meaning. It is the admonition of Jesus contained in his words, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." The things to which Jesus referred are not necessarily "riches, and honour," but those things which appear to be needful in daily human experience.

Christian Scientists, following the line of thought indicated in the foregoing Scriptural passages, are striving to gain spiritual understanding, rather than to acquire material possessions. They do not attempt to "demonstrate" things, but to demonstrate the truth; and in this way they find that, in accordance with the promise of the Master, the needful things are added. They are encouraged in this endeavor by the words of their beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 60), "Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul."
