From Letters, Substantially as Published

A General, speaking last Sunday to the members of the Kennington and North Lambeth Post-War Brotherhood, alluded to Christian Scientists and their attitude towards pain. The General seems to think that Christian Scientists ignore suffering, but this is entirely untrue. I hope, therefore, that you will find space in your valuable newspaper for a brief correction.

Christian Science does not ignore suffering but deals with it in the way Christ Jesus instructed his followers to do. On page 460 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes: "Sickness is neither imaginary nor unreal,—that is, to the frightened, false sense of the patient. Sickness is more than fancy; it is solid conviction. It is therefore to be dealt with through right apprehension of the truth of being."

The quality of compassion is not only desirable but is an absolute necessity in Christian Science practice, the ethics of which rest on the Christian idealism.
