"The kingdom of heaven in man"

[Original article in French]

The alert student who examines the writings of the New Testament cannot fail to find that, aside from the numerous parables and allegories which Jesus used to illustrate his teaching, he stated for the sake of his disciples in simple and clear language certain precise rules through which to demonstrate his teaching. It is evident that it is only in the measure of his observance of these rules that the true Christian walks in the path of Christ, Truth, and receives the promised blessings.

Among these rules there is one the importance and practical value of which cannot escape earnest consideration. In his great sermon Jesus said: "Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? . . . But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

To human sense it seems, indeed, as if there were no needs more immediate or pressing than those of food and clothing. Yet Jesus considered of first importance the search for the kingdom of God. This means that, whatever the circumstances and needs which beset us, our first duty is to seek God and His kingdom of righteousness and harmony.
