Penetration

FATHER, we thank Thee that the light of Truth
Reaches the dullness of earth's heavy dream;
That Thy dear tenderness shines forth undimmed,
And undismayed pours forth its loving beam.

Father, we thank Thee for Truth's trenchant might,
Piercing the frozen crust of lifeless creed:
Through dull belief cleaving resistless way,
Light in the darkness of the world's great need.

O Truth, so shine in me, and pierce the night,
The heavy gloom of dense mortality!
Fill with Thy quickening beam of living light
The waiting heart that only longs for Thee.
