The Power of the Lesson-Sermon

Mary Baker Eddy has stated in the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. III, Sect. 1) that "the prosperity of Christian Science largely depends" on the Lesson-Sermons to be found in the Christian Science Quarterly. This By-Law, which refers particularly to the duties of Readers of The Mother Church, implies that it is of great importance that these Lesson-Sermons be systematically studied by all students of Christian Science. Experience has shown that our Leader never gave directions without having very sound reasons for doing so. This is why strict obedience to the Manual never fails to bring a blessing.

Let us, then, see what study of the Lesson-Sermon means. It means that many thousands of Christian Scientists throughout the world are engaged in studying and declaring, with various degrees of understanding, the truths to be found in these citations from the Bible and from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of Christian Science, by Mary Baker Eddy. Thus is constituted a scientific defense against the false claims of evil, and the annihilation of them.

As darkness disappears before the light, so the supposed activity of evil is destroyed as students are faithfully engaged in this simple means of frustrating its false claims.
