After two years of faithfully following the diet and taking...

After two years of faithfully following the diet and taking the medicine prescribed by reputable, conscientious physicians, I found myself "nothing bettered, but rather grew worse." The final medical verdict was that I could live but a few months, and perhaps only a few weeks. The diagnosis was tuberculosis of the intestines.

In the early stages of this experience, various friends had recommended Christian Science, and I informed them that I was using Christian Science all the time, that I knew all about it; it was "mind over matter." I really knew nothing of it. I had not read the textbook or any of the periodicals, nor had I attended a Christian Science church service or a lecture. Neither would I listen very much to the experiences of my Christian Science friends who had benefited by doing these things.

When the final medical diagnosis pronounced my case hopeless, however, and death seemed inevitable, my thought turned to Christian Science and led me to the conclusion that what I had been thinking of as "mind over matter" was not Science; and so, for information, I attended a Christian Science lecture given that week in Houston, Texas, where I then lived.
