Angels

Probably most of us have been impressed with the beautiful Biblical stories of the appearing of angels. We have been thrilled with the way they warned spiritually-minded ones of peril, led them safely out of danger, or brought them good news of some spiritual blessing to come.

Doubtless, too, many of us, when troubled and perplexed, have longed for angels to come to us and show us the way out of our present difficulties. And have we hopelessly concluded that this was impossible, thinking, perhaps, that angels no longer come to men to help them, their appearing having ceased with Bible times? If so, the teaching of Christian Science to the contrary brings us great joy and comfort, for this Science shows us how it is possible to entertain angels today.

On page 581 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy defines "angels," in part, as "God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect." This definition removes our concept of angels from the realm of the mysterious and supernatural into the field of intelligence and reason, and we begin to see how natural it is for "God's thoughts" or "spiritual intuitions" to come to us continually and reveal the way out of our difficulties. Through an earnest, prayerful study of Christian Science, and the constant effort to purify our thinking, we receive spiritual intuitions, and thus entertain angels.
