In 1918, at a time when, because of social and business problems added to physical sickness, I was greatly perplexed, Christian Science was brought to my notice. I commenced to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, more from a sense of curiosity about it than from any expectancy of good from it; however, I had been reading that volume only a short while when I was healed of duodenal ulcers, from which I had suffered under medical and dietetic treatment for thirteen years. At the same time I was healed of headaches.

I was also healed of a malignant type of boils through treatment lovingly given by a consecrated Christian Science practitioner. On page 454 of Science and Health occur the words. "The use of tobacco or intoxicating drinks is not in harmony with Christian Science." My attention was called to this passage by the practitioner who was helping me at that time to gain a spiritual viewpoint of life. I shall always be grateful for her loving encouragement, because all desire for tobacco and intoxicating drinks immediately left me. These healings have remained permanent since that time, now over eighteen years ago.

During the intervening years I have experienced the healing, through my own understanding of Christian Science, of sorrow and several discordant physical conditions; and it has been my privilege to witness in others the healing of much discord. As I learn to "stand porter at the door of thought" (ibid., p. 392), I find it true that I control myself harmoniously through right thinking—thus I find that instead of having to meet and overcome physical discords in myself, I am, through progress in understanding, protected from them. My son of nearly fourteen years has been reared with Christian Science teaching, to the exclusion of material remedies, and has been healed of several children's complaints, has been protected many times during school epidemics, and is a strong, healthy boy. An outstanding healing with him came one summer day some years ago when his face became swollen from a poisonous insect bite. For severa hours he could not see, the eyes being entirely closed. Within forty-eight hours this condition had entirely disappeared through the application of the truth in Christian Science. The confidence he gained from a contemplation of Truth and Love during that period deprived fear of any power.
