Spiritual understanding gives man spiritual power

Spiritual understanding gives man spiritual power. I am grateful to God for the spiritual understanding I have gained through the study of our Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly — it is teaching me how to find the kingdom of God within.

For twenty years Mind has been my only medicine. Mrs. Eddy says in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 140), "Worshipping through the medium of matter is paganism," and, "We worship spiritually, only as we cease to worship materially." Today I am more convinced than ever that every problem has to be solved in a metaphysical way, in order that we may reach a right conclusion, and I am grateful to our dear Leader for giving us the Christian Science textbook, which is the key to eternal life. This key, properly applied, opens wide the door to Mind's universe of spiritual ideas.

Like many others I too can testify to the truth that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." When first I became interested in Christian Science I was living in Christchurch, New Zealand. I had been a great sufferer from earliest childhood, and during the last five years I had become a helpless invalid, both mentally and physically. The final breakdown was due to spasms, nausea, insomnia, and self-consciousness. My life was one long, hideous nightmare; obsessions possessed me, so that I saw nothing but the mental hospital on one side and the grave on the other. Is it any wonder that after being pronounced incurable by medical science, I should rejoice and praise God for my life and my freedom, which came to me in one Christian Science treatment and three weeks' reading of Science and Health!
