Standard-Star

The Standard-Star for August 28, in the column headed "The Counselor," carried a brief discussion of the theories of Spinoza. It is represented that the philosophy of Spinoza is "vaguely similar to certain basic theories of the Christian Science belief." May I respectfully ask space for a word of explanation. It may be said in this connection that to students of Christian Science no resemblance exists between this Science and the various theological, healing, and philosophical systems of either present or past times. This will be apparent as it is understood that matter does not enter into the concepts of reality as defined by Christian Science.

In connection with the question of similarity, may I quote Mrs. Eddy's words (Science and Health, p. 126): "I have found nothing in ancient or in modern systems on which to found my own, except the teachings and demonstrations of our great Master and the lives of prophets and apostles. The Bible has been my only authority."

Christian Science reveals God, Spirit, Mind, Life, Love, and Truth (wholly apart from matter with its limitations and imperfections), as the only cause and creator. Christian Science is neither a speculative philosophy nor a résumé of dogmatic theology. It is founded upon the Bible; and the practice, or the practical application, of Christian Science is the demonstration of the truth underlying that first great commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," with its companion rule, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself," together with "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."
