Sovereignty

Every hour of the day humanity is tacitly admitting the influence of power of some kind, and the general admission is that two conflicting powers, good and evil, are simultaneously in operation. This undiscriminating admission lies at the root of all discord, and it is corrected by Christian Science. Throughout human history, righteous power, invisible to the physical senses, has saved humanity from complete subjection to evil. Full emancipation from evil influences is destined to become universally evident through the demonstration of scientific Christianity.

When Jesus entered a synagogue on a certain occasion and cast the evil spirit out of a man, the onlookers "were all amazed," saying, "What new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him." The amazement evoked by this healing act betrayed ignorance of the sovereignty of Spirit. Christian Science dispels the ignorance which causes men in general to submit to supposedly incurable ills and afflictive man-made laws based on material sense evidence. It is quickening the spirituality through which humanity's yearning after better conditions is destined to be satisfied. The power of good alone is authoritative. Today the same power of Christ, Truth, which Jesus demonstrated, is casting out "unclean spirits" of fear, disease, resentment, annoyance, and other inventions of the carnal mind, through the ministry of Christian Science.

Righteousness and rejoicing, not sin and mourning, is the decree of divine Love. "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn." There is peace of heart when one is governed by the power of God, good. This statement in Proverbs may refer to outward rulers and their subjects, but it is also applicable to the sovereignty of Truth, which authoritatively casts out evil beliefs. There is mourning for one enslaved by evil beliefs, and rejoicing for whoever is proving that purity and loving-kindness are bearing rule in his consciousness. Spiritual sense bears witness only to Spirit, whereas material sense bears witness only to matter. Spiritual witnessing alone is real and sovereign.
