"What we shall be"

The beautiful Scriptural citation from I John 3:1–3, which is read at the close of each Christian Science Sunday service as a correlative to "the scientific statement of being," given by Mrs. Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 468), contains the definite statement, "Beloved, now are we the sons of God," followed by the further declaration, "And it doth not yet appear what we shall be." The latter declaration may seem, however, to inject an element of doubt or uncertainty as to the dependability of the preceding positive assertion.

A deep-rooted belief that Truth is incomprehensible has been developed in the human mind during centuries of futile endeavor to understand from an intellectual or a material basis the simple statements of spiritual truth contained in the Scriptures. The latent fear of the future, inherent in human consciousness, also seems to contribute to the doubt and hesitancy which would deprive us of wholehearted acceptance of the assurance of our present and eternal sonship with God. And to unenlightened mortal sense a season of conjecture and speculation as to future changes may be indulged to the exclusion of our present enjoyment of the heritage of the sons of God.

What a glorious and liberating instrumentality God has given to humanity through the spiritual-mindedness and obedience of Mary Baker Eddy! Through her spiritual discernment of and obedience to the voice of God, she was enabled to give us the scientific "key" to the Scriptures, in the Christian Science textbook, whereby all the mystery and doubt which seems to enshroud human thought in its effort to understand Biblical teaching can be and is being swept away.
