Signs of the Times

[Rt. Rev. G. R. S. Reid, M. A., D. D., as quoted in the Quarterly Register, Edinburgh, Scotland]

When we come to look back on this time of distress we may find, like the Psalmist, that it was good for us to have been afflicted. It is easy to bask in the sunshine of prosperity. The crucial test of a nation, as of an individual, is their conduct under hardship and adversity. ... It may prove a blessing in disguise if it checks extravagance and self-indulgence and leads us all, not only to think more of the needs of others, but to turn more earnestly to God.

The church has still, we believe, a great mission to fulfill, and many are looking to us with wistful eyes for guidance and inspiration. We can still make our appeal to that deep religious instinct, which only finds its full satisfaction in God, and which, unsatisfied, is the source of continual unrest and discontent. We can still trust ... divine Mind ... revealed in Jesus Christ. We can still believe in that eternal purpose unfolded in the course of the Bible and the history of the church—a purpose of love for all men.
