Item of Interest

The Congress of the United States has appointed a commission to supervise a nation-wide recognition of the bicentennial of George Washington. The Christian Science Board of Directors has considered what may be done by The Mother Church, and by branch churches and societies in the United States, as part of this celebration, and has decided to hold a special memorial service. A precedent for such a service may be found in the fact that special services were held on Lincoln's birthday in 1907, 1908, 1909, and 1910 with the approval of Mrs. Eddy. In Boston the service will be held in The Mother Church edifice at 10.45 a.m. on Washington's Birthday, Monday, February 22, 1932, the date of the beginning of the celebration. The Bible Lesson Committee is arranging a special Lesson-Sermon for the occasion, which will be published in the February 6 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel. The usual form of service for Sunday will be followed at this Monday meeting; and to the customary notices there will be added a special announcement or brief address suitable for the occasion. Branch churches and societies will shortly receive a copy of the address to be read in The Mother Church by the First Reader, and may include it, if they wish, in such services as they may hold in remembrance of the ideals and accomplishments of George Washington.
