It is almost twenty years since I first heard of Christian Science and something of what it was doing for tired and suffering humanity. a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was lent to me, and through reading this book I was healed of valvular heart disease which had greatly troubled me all my life. I had been repeatedly attacked very severely, each attack being worse than the preceding one, until it was stated by the physician attending the case that I could not possibly live more than another fortnight.

The chapter on Prayer at the beginning of the textbook was a great comfort to me, especially the spiritual interpretation of the Lord's Prayer (pp. 16, 17), which gave me hope and encouragement. I soon became conscious of a wonderful sense of freedom and health such as I had never known before. I knew that I was healed; and these many years of active life since have proved it beyond possibility of doubt.

For a long time previous to hearing of Christian Science I had entirely given up praying, because I did not understand what true prayer was. I had so often prayed to God to make me well and strong, and seemingly never got an answer! Through the teaching of Christian Science I soon learned that true prayer is right thinking about God and man made in His image and likeness. Thus my consciousness became awakened, and I steadfastly began to perceive what praying to God really means. I began to get a clearer glimpse and understanding of Jesus' teaching, and of what he meant when he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
