A Mighty Army

Have you enlisted? Are you willing to be a brave soldier? Will you always keep on your armor, ready to do battle? These are a few of the questions one should ask himself when one thinks he would like to become a Christian Scientist. Such a statement may seem surprising to those who think that all one has to do to become a Christian Scientist is to purchase the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and make the acquaintance of a practitioner. No; though our healing may come to us spontaneously, it is far more than that.

On page 450 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy tells us that "the Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death; and he will overcome them by understanding their nothingness and the allness of God, or good."

Let us study a moment and see what our motives really are in wanting to join the mighty army of Christian Scientists that now encircles the globe. Do we want to enlist simply in order that we may dwell in the shadow of another's victories? Perhaps we are afraid and think that, if we are a member of this army, the other soldiers will take care of us. Would either of these reasons be sufficient to make a soldier acceptable for service in his country's army? All can quickly answer that question.
