My parents being members of an orthodox church and...

My parents being members of an orthodox church and very religious, I was naturally trained in their belief. When I reached maturity I had to stand helplessly by while a loving wife and mother was taken from her small children after months of suffering from tuberculosis, and a few years later one of our children also passed on with the same disease. When I was very kindly told by the minister of our church that the days of miracles had passed and that in the present age we could not expect that severe sickness could be healed by prayer, I became dissatisfied with the religion I had been taught to rely upon, and concluded there was something wrong with it. For if prayer could not be answered, why pray? I then decided to investigate other religions. Being of an inquiring mind and fond of reading, I devoted most of my leisure time for several years to the study of the religions of the world.

During this time an old friend, who had been incapacitated for a long time with nervous prostration, came into my office in apparent good health, and told me of Christian Science, through which he said he had been healed. Although I doubted the cure, I procured and began reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Its teaching at first seemed visionary; but as I continued to read, I came to the conclusion that if this book was true, it explained some thins that I had long been searching for. I soon felt that I had received benefits from some source, as several minor troubles which had bothered me disappeared. Thus I encouraged to study more earnestly, and since then I have relied wholly upon Christian Science for help. By applying the little knowledge I have, with occasional help from practitioners, I have received many blessings in the way of supply and of physical healings.

One instance I specially wish to mention. A few years ago I had a severe attack of what medical men call acute inflammatory rheumatism. My hip was very much inflamed and so painful that I could not bear even to rest my foot on the floor. After trying for several days, without success, to overcome the difficulty through my own understanding, one evening I telephoned a practitioner and asked for help. She very lovingly promised to work for me at once, and I sat in a quiet room and read from the textbook while she worked. In less than thirty minutes all pain ceased and the inflammation subsided. I went to bed, slept all night, and in the morning all trace of the disease was gone. I have never had a return of the trouble.
