The article entitled "Sidelights on Life," in your issue of April 17, presented important points when it indicated that fear is harmful to health, and that "faith, courage, a serene mind" are helpful. However, inferences in the item gave a misleading impression of the method and scope of Christian Science, and it should be understood that there is far more to Christian Science than may be gleaned from your contributor's explanation.

Christian Science has no relation to Couéism, as implied by a question in the item; nor is it similar to any system that depends on the carnal mind. Coué admitted that fundamentally his method is hypnotic. On the other hand, Christian Science depends entirely on God, divine Mind, and its healing is accomplished by the spiritual method taught and practiced by Christ Jesus. The Master healed functional and organic disease, sin, and discord by spiritual means; and he signified that his adherents should follow his example when he said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, was a deep student of the Bible. Through revelation and reason she unfolded the divine laws underlying Jesus' healing method; and she utilized these laws to heal disease and sin, and taught others how to use them effectually. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (Pref., p. xi) she says, "The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus' time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation."
