A profound sense of gratitude prompts me to testify to...

A profound sense of gratitude prompts me to testify to the many blessings and healings I have experienced in the course of many years. I was not led to Christian Science because I was sick physically, but because I was a seeker for the truth. For many years I was a member of the state church, which I attended regularly for six years. I was also a member of a religious temperance association, which afforded me opportunity to read the Bible. Much that it contains was not clear to me; especially did the healings recorded therein seem to me to be very strange, almost incredible. The desire to know more about God became ever stronger in me, and silently I asked for His guidance and for health, physical and mental.

Mrs. Eddy says in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 1), "Desire is prayer;" and I was to experience the truth of these words. About fifteen years ago my wife was afflicted with stomach trouble. I called in the family doctor, who did not consider the complaint serious. He prescribed complete rest for about ten days, and some medicine. I could not leave my work during this time, but we had a friend who, a short time previous to this, had been on the brink of the grave, and who had been healed of a so-called incurable disease so quickly that I was very much surprised. I asked her if she could nurse my wife and attend to the housework. She willingly agreed to do so, but did more than I asked of her. When my wife had recovered, she asked our friend what she had done to heal her so quickly of her trouble. Several of my wife's questions met with no response; and it was not until I too asked her to tell us that she answered, "It was through Christian Science."

We asked our friend for some literature on this teaching, and the same evening she brought us some copies of Der Herold der Christian Science and the textbook. I read several pages of this remarkable book that evening, and although a great deal was not clear to me, I had to admit that here was what I had been seeking so long. On retiring I asked God for guidance. The answer was an overwhelming sense of happiness. I felt such a sense of love, too fervent to be described in words; I really had a foretaste of the kingdom of heaven, and of spiritual strength as it has been proclaimed and revealed to us in the Bible by Christ Jesus. Happier and more contented than ever before in my life in the consciousness of having found the right way, I fell asleep.
