Democrat and Chronicle

Word has reached me that a short time ago a clergyman of Rochester, New York, made certain remarks in one of his sermons published in your columns, to indicate that Christian Scientists deify Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of the Christian Science religion.

His remarks are both extravagant and inaccurate, for Christian Scientists do not deify Mrs. Eddy. Mrs. Eddy herself has rebuked such a thought, and refers to herself only as the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and the Leader of this denomination. It is an historical fact that she is the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Martin Luther founded the Lutheran church and was its leader. John Wesley propounded the doctrines of the Methodist church and may be regarded as its leader. The leadership of Martin Luther is still found in his writings. The same is true of the leadership of John Wesley. Certainly there can be no just cause for criticizing Christian Scientists because they look upon Mrs. Eddy as the Leader of the Christian Science denomination. But this is not deification.

Accusations such as the one in this clergyman's sermon are old and have been disproved from the beginning by writings of Mrs. Eddy. On page 303 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" Mrs. Eddy replies to Mark Twain's accusation along the same line. She says: "I believe in one Christ, teach one Christ, know of but one Christ. I believe in but one incarnation, one Mother Mary. I know that I am not that one, and I have never claimed to be. It suffices me to learn the Science of the Scriptures relative to this subject." And in her address to her followers in 1901 (p. 34) Mrs. Eddy says, "Follow your Leader only so far as she follows Christ."
