As reported in your recent issue "a scathing denunciation of quacks, charlatans, faith healing" et cetera, was made recently before a gathering of representative citizens in Aurora, by a medical doctor who said: "Christian Science has gone the route to Jewish science until to-day, the most modern version is practiced by one, ... who heals by laying her hands on the patient." This is not the first time this physician has misrepresented Christian Science, nor is it the first time that it has seemed necessary to correct the false impression that may have been conveyed by him to readers of the public press. In these days of progress a speaker seeks in vain who would seek to gain the confidence of his audience by censorious allusions to a great religion; for the majority of his hearers are fully aware that Christian Science has not departed from its place in the hearts of its adherents. Indeed, I surmise that all fair-minded persons understand that it has not advanced to its unlikeness—Jewish science. Moreover, most persons know that Christian Science is quite unlike the gospel preached by many evangelists, and that Christian Science does not permit the laying on of hands. The Christian Science doctrine of healing salvation has been and may be misunderstood and misused by cults or charlatans; yet it stands as a religion based upon and practiced in conformity with the teachings of Christ Jesus, and it continues to bring healing to the sick and redemption to the sinner in the identical manner revealed, demonstrated, and taught by Mary Baker Eddy in her writings. There is no "modern version," nor will there ever be a revised version of Christian Science.

Christian Scientists have no quarrel with differing forms of religion or medicine. They preserve the kindly attitude toward their opponents recommended by Mrs. Eddy as follows: "If ecclesiastical sects or medical schools turn a deaf ear to the teachings of Christian Science, then part from these opponents as did Abraham when he parted from Lot, and say in thy heart: 'Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren'" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 444).
