I did not begin the study of Christian Science to obtain...

I did not begin the study of Christian Science to obtain physical healing, though I was in dire need of it: I sought an understanding of God that would give peace and contentment. Along with the spiritual uplifting and peace came relief from constant fear and the healing of many discordant physical conditions from which I had suffered almost incessantly since childhood. These healings came as the result of daily study of the Christian Science Lesson-Sermon. Several months after I began to study, the first test, as to whom I would serve, came in an aggravated condition which several physicians had said could not be cured without a surgical operation,—and possibly not then,—and it became necessary for me to decide whether I should submit to the said operation or rely upon the operation of Truth and Love, with the help of a practitioner. The latter course was chosen, resulting in the sense of pain giving way to a feeling of peace within a few minutes after the practitioner was called. Upon awakening the next morning I realized a freedom which I had never before experienced. Seventeen years have elapsed, and there has been no return of the condition. My general health has been all that one could desire during these years.

A very beautiful healing which came two years after the above was that of our one-year-old daughter. The child was taken suddenly ill one evening, and as we were unable to get into communication with a practitioner, and the need for help seemed so urgent, my husband, who was not a Scientist, called a physician, who called a specialist in children's diseases. We were informed that our baby could not live more than twelve hours, that she had a most acute form of spinal meningitis, and that there was nothing in medical science that could counteract the disease in that form.

The physicians worked very faithfully for six hours to combat the seeming terrible condition, but without avail. They constantly told me there was no hope; that the next breath might be the last. Just as persistently did I hold on to and declare the truth, rejoicing more and more in the knowledge that the baby's life was safe in God's care, regardless of sense-testimony and the so-called laws of medical science. After telling us they had exhausted all the methods known to them, one of the dear physicians offered to remain with us until the end should come. They were told that the baby was being placed in God's care through an understanding of Christian Science, and that we would remain alone with the child. In the meantime, a Christian Science friend had been called and was giving us supporting help.
