I have no desire or intention to start a newspaper discussion on religion, and write merely to correct an erroneous statement made by a speaker at Bordage Hall recently in a talk on the Bible. In that statement Christian Scientists are accused of denying "in one way or another the fundamental teaching of the Word of God." Now, no assertion could be farther from the truth. The first religious tenet of this teaching is, "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 497). The Bible is the Christian Scientists' daily study, and the readings from the Bible take up a considerable portion of the time occupied by the services of the Christian Science churches. Through the unfolding of the spiritual teaching of the Bible by Christian Science, the whole and undivided garment of Truth is rendered practical in its healing and saving effects on the problems of everyday life. To quote again from Science and Health (p. 242), "Mere speculation or superstition appropriates no part of the divine vesture, while inspiration restores every part of the Christly garment of righteousness."
