"Truth and its supremacy"

On page 293 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "Christian Science brings to light Truth and its supremacy, universal harmony, the entireness of God, good, and the nothingness of evil." There can be no doubt as to the meaning of the words. They are a straightforward declaration of the allness of God, the supremacy of Truth, the universal nature of harmony, and, as a corollary, of the nothingness or unreality of evil. The physical senses of mortals may testify differently, do seem constantly to testify differently; yet the facts remain as Christian Science states them, that God, good, is infinite and evil unreal. The Christian Scientist whole-heartedly agrees with Isaiah, speaking as the faithful prophet of God: "I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God."

The Christian Scientist maintains, then, that God is infinite good. From the beginning of his study of Christian Science he has felt this to be true; and what a load was lifted from him when the revelation of the allness of God came to him and he saw, perhaps but feebly at first, that in the light of that revelation not one phase of evil could be real! Probably wonderful things happened to him then—some disease, perhaps of long standing, disappearing, some sinful desire or practice vanishing, some belief of limitation taking its departure, leaving him radiant with joy and full of hope at the prospects of the future. The allness of God, good! Never again would life be as it had been to him; for now he saw his life as at-one with infinite Life, as at-one with infinite Truth, as at-one with infinite Love, as at-one with infinite good. The way might be long and rough to his advancing steps Spiritward; but how plain it had become, because of the bright light that now shone upon it!

And so the genuine student of Christian Science has progressed, perhaps for many years. Numerous are the demonstrations he has been able to make over the errors of mortal belief, not only for himself, but for others also. And all these have cheered him, heartened him, given him courage to proceed with the task of routing the enemies of God—that is, the false beliefs of mortals—through the understanding of God and His laws. One wonders why any Christian Scientist who has repeatedly demonstrated the power of Truth over the errors of material sense, evil beliefs, can possibly doubt the power of spiritual understanding, and seem to give way at times to the suggestion that evil in some form or other is real. Our revered Leader writes (Science and Health, p. 563), "We may well be perplexed at human fear; and still more astounded at hatred, which lifts its hydra head, showing its horns in the many inventions of evil;" and then she asks the arresting question, "But why should we stand aghast at nothingness?"
