That the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is indeed a key to the Scriptures has been verified in my experience. From childhood I had been taught the orthodox interpretation of the Bible by my father, who was a Baptist clergyman. Before the age of twenty, however, I was quietly studying the Bible alone, devoting much time in the effort to reconcile statements made and commands given. Finally I decided not to concern myself further; so I laid my Bible aside, and out of sight, with the thought that sometime I should be able to understand it, and in particular comprehend just what Jesus' teaching and works meant. I then turned to various teachings, searching for helpful, uplifting theories, sifting them and accepting what seemed to me reasonable. Never having had good health from childhood, during this period I suffered much from various ailments and was in a deplorable mental state.

When I was led to study Christian Science, I was recovering from a nervous breakdown, this being the second I had experienced. As a child I had been treated by allopathic physicians, later by osteopathic and homeopathic doctors. In investigating Christian Science my desire was to learn what it was that was changing people mentally; I did not anticipate that I should be healed physically. From the time

I first opened the pages of Science and Health I studied it daily, and soon wanted my Bible, which I had not read for five years.
