[Written for the Sentinel]

The Star

Tell us, Wisemen, did you know,
On that night long years gone by,
What the star you followed meant,
What that glow from out the sky?

Surely as you went your way
Slowly on to Bethlehem,
Angels guided you to him
Who would bring the truth to men!
When you came and saw the child
Closely held to Mary's breast,
Did you know his word would bring
Men and nations peace and rest?

You brought your gifts of gold and myrrh,
And frankincense, so rare and sweet;
A world now brings its gifts of love
To lay in reverence at his feet.
Though manger born, to heights sublime
He rose, and left his precepts here;
He proved himself the Son of God,
And left for us this gift most dear.

The star, the babe, the man, the Christ,
Each comes to us through clearing sight;
The lessons learned, the truth beheld,
The darkness gone—behold the light!
