[Written for the Sentinel]

Protection

I heard an angel singing in the night,—
The night of doubt, confusion, and dismay:
Fear not! Thy God is with thee; thou art His.
He holds thy hand; thy footsteps cannot stray.
Thy daily deeds are opportunities
To prove the immanence of Love divine,
Not stepping-stones to far-off heavenly rest.
Each task performed in love, each gentle word
And kindly smile, and e'en the firm rebuke,—
These are reflections of omnipotence.
Be not afraid! 'T is Love that bids thee speak,
Or hold thy peace; and Love appoints thy way.
Love is beside, around thee, and within.
Love shelters thee and will not let thee fall;
These hearts are in His care: do thou rejoice!
