[Written for the Sentinel]

Redemption

O'ER heaven and earth, in concord blest,
Love reigned, supreme in law.
Fair seas and flowering fields expressed
The good their Maker saw.
The stars in bounteous light above
Their radiant orbits trod;
And men, beholding God as Love,
Bore witness, Love is God.

Beneath, in error's darkness hid,
Wrong warred with lawless wrong.
Could hate the tyrant's rage forbid?
Could pride withstand the strong?
Could false belief redemption find
Through codes of finite thought?
Could fear its victim's chain unbind,
Or heal the ills it wrought?

Within the formless void of night
Truth e'er resistless shone;
And hearts that turned to greet its light
Rejoiced, with Life at-one.
Dismayed, the stricken hordes of sense
Surge back in fierce alarm;
But hearts that rest in Love's defense
No shafts of hate can harm.

Supreme—above, beneath, within;
Adored in Christian prayer;
Unknown by doubt, denied by sin,
But sov'reign everywhere,—
Truth, ever perfect consciousness,
Divine, enfolding all,
Declares the Love that works to bless
Whene'er His children call.
