The belief, held by many who are uninformed, that Christian Science practice is simply the power of mind over matter, is evidently shared by your contributor, for he hastened to add that he is not a Christian Scientist. Before her discovery of Christian Science Mrs. Eddy had proved, as have many physicians since, that the human body is the servant of thought, not partially, but wholly. Now Christian Science is scientific in that it deals with causes instead of effects; hence Christian Science practice is not the power of mind over matter, but the power of right thoughts, spiritual ideas, over wrong thoughts or material beliefs, such as fear, passion, hate, and jealousy. It is plain that when the erroneous beliefs which cause disease are displaced by spiritual ideas, the disease must be eliminated as well; such a method of treatment is evidently both scientific and Christian, for thus did Christ Jesus practice and preach. Christian Science is the one real Science, because it is based solely upon the understanding of spiritual reality, not upon physical sense testimony, and thus emanates from God, divine Mind, the source of all truth. The word "science" means exact, provable knowledge, and Christian Science justifies its claim to the term by the healing of the sick and the overcoming of sin by means of the application of the spiritual rules expressive of its divine Principle. On page 127 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "If God, the All-in-all, be the creator of the spiritual universe, including man, then everything entitled to a classification as truth, or Science, must be comprised in a knowledge or understanding of God, for there can be nothing beyond illimitable divinity."
