Maintain

To-day, there is hardly a word so much misused among us as the word "protection." In the general usage, one is often given a sense that there is something to be protected from. It would almost seem, sometimes, as if we were striving to win protection from evil, when, instead, protection necessarily follows the joy of maintaining in our thought the true facts of being. If the former be the case, "the last shall be first;" for we must maintain the truth of existence, and be thereby protected. Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 417): "Maintain the facts of Christian Science,—that Spirit is God, and therefore cannot be sick; that what is termed matter cannot be sick; that all causation is Mind, acting through spiritual law. Then hold your ground with the unshaken understanding of Truth and Love, and you will win." Here we have found cause to be Mind, the creator of all that is good, true, and reliable. With this truth in consciousness, we can go forth with assurance and confidence that we are guided and protected. However, if we fail to maintain God's image and likeness in our thinking, then nothing we can do will protect us from the errors of human suggestion, which are so constantly held before us through the false testimony of corporeal sense.

The proof of spiritual healing is with us, when we thus maintain the facts of divine Principle, Love, in our thinking; and God sustains us openly. This is the correct sense of protection; for all belief in the error is thereby destroyed. Christ Jesus must have demonstrated this sense of protection in his forty days' fast in the wilderness, knowing, as he did, that man lives in and by God, Spirit, alone. Christ Jesus always maintained his unity with divine Principle, Life; and divine Principle always sustained him, as the Scriptures plainly reveal. He is our Way-shower out of the deceptive physical senses, which would suggest another power besides the one Mind.

In the record of spiritual creation, as given in the first chapter of Genesis, we read, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them;" also, "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." God, good, maintains and sustains man, His reflection, giving him all good, activity, boundless freedom, absolute liberty to stand as His child. We need to affirm the truth of spiritual creation constantly, and find our protection from evil of every form in this affirmation, remembering that Truth declared carries also the power of demonstration. In the epistle to Titus, Paul writes: "This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men."
