Signs of the Times

[Delta, Visalia, Calif.]

The unrest of the world to-day is not so much social and economical as it is spiritual. While it manifests itself in social and economic conditions, yet the real cause is deeper—it is spiritual. The great mass of humanity is striving for freedom from the galling conditions that have long oppressed it. The world has plenty of bread—but is not satisfied. Man is seeking for happiness, which is the right of every one. Slavery and suffering has been the heritage of too many of the world's people, and there is a spirit that is stirring the heart of humanity, and a spirit that will never rest until autocracy is stripped of its pernicious principles and democracy comes to set the captives free! We may just as well begin to adjust ourselves to this changed spirit. It is permeating the earth to its remotest bounds.

The old world is dead. A new age is upon us,—an age in which righteousness is to be the supreme power, and principles of democracy hold sway.
