I first heard of Christian Science through a friend, who lent me for a few days Mrs. Eddy's book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." At the time I was on a visit and had little opportunity for reading, but the few crumbs I managed to pick up changed my whole outlook on life and I knew Christian Science was the truth. Life had seemed a long battle with self and circumstances, but after those few hurried readings I was filled with a sense of peace and joy and had a small glimmering of what Life really meant. This lasted for two years, when I began to feel the need of more help and so bought the textbook and definitely took my stand for Christian Science. This did not seem so easy, for my husband was a doctor and I was surrounded with medicine and the medical thought.

When the book arrived and I started to read it, my eyes became terribly inflamed and other distressing ailments manifested themselves, ailments I had never suffered from before. I dragged myself about for three days wondering what it all meant, but refusing my husband's proffered aid. I had almost given up one day, but Love gave me courage once more to stand fast, and as I again refused the help that seemed so tempting and clung to the truth, every ailment disappeared like mist before the sun. I looked at my husband and asked him what had become of my inflamed, suppurating eyes. He saw that they were healed and marveled, while my heart was filled with joy and gratitude. That evening I was able to read my precious new book for the first time and opened it at page 422, where Mrs. Eddy says: "If the reader of this book observes a great stir throughout his whole system, and certain moral and physical symptoms seem aggravated, these indications are favorable. Continue to read, and the book will become the physician, allaying the tremor which Truth often brings to error when destroying it." I felt that Love had guided me to the explanation of my experience.

Since then the truth has done untold things for me and for my children; and though my husband continued in his medical practice, he greatly respected and appreciated all that Christian Science did for us and our home. When he gave his earth-life for his country and his sense of right, Christian Science did indeed prove a very present help to me in trouble. My children and I know that all we have and are is due to this truth that Mrs. Eddy has made so clear for us in her wonderful textbook. My great hope is that I shall not fail to see any opening or opportunity to hand on to others this "pearl of great price."
