Christian Science came into my life in the winter of 1911...

Christian Science came into my life in the winter of 1911, while I was recuperating from a spell of illness. I was asked to attend a Christian Science service and said I would, as I was away from home where no one knew me. I did not understand any of the service but was impressed with the large attendance. After that I attended for several weeks, and on returning home purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. After reading the book three weeks I laid aside my glasses, which had been worn eight years. Three specialists had told me I would never be able to go without them, and I had worn them constantly from early morning until I went to bed.

A short time afterwards I was mixing lime to use for a whitewash and some of the liquid went into my eye. The pain was so great I moaned aloud and put my hand over the eye. I then thought I would try Christian Science, so realized the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) as best I could, and in a few minutes all pain left. I still had my hand over the eye, but the thought came that I had received my help, so I took my hand off. At this moment a neighbor came out, one who was interested in Christian Science. I told her what had transpired in the last few minutes, and on looking at the eye she said there was scarcely any inflammation left. In less than an hour I never would have known that anything had happened.

Being a graduate of an eastern hospital, I continued to nurse after taking up the study of Christian Science and was able to do more and better work as I had learned what obedience meant. I am grateful to say that I have not nursed under doctors for the past six years. Toward the last of my materia medica work I was in attendance in a family where spinal meningitis of the worst form was manifested and each of the family, besides the infant boy, who succumbed, was in bed from seven to ten days very ill. One afternoon I too seemed stricken and each hour I grew worse. As I seemed unable to do the work I told the patient's mother it would be necessary to call another nurse. This she would not do, saying she would wait until morning. I left the house about half past five in the afternoon and called a practitioner on arriving home. I suffered severely up to two o'clock in the morning, but on awakening later every symptom had disappeared and I was able to return to my duties. All the family were surprised, also those in the house with me who saw my condition. I have been healed of blood poisoning, burns, and swollen feet, and a sprained ankle was instantaneously healed. A practitioner was present when this accident occurred and the truth was declared immediately.
