I came into Christian Science in June, 1918, while serving...

I came into Christian Science in June, 1918, while serving in the Army in Hawaii. At that time I was experiencing error in its darkest form and was suffering both mentally and physically. I could find relief nowhere and finally became so depressed that I lost my belief in everything and life became merely something to be endured until death should come as a relief.

Then Christian Science came to me. One Wednesday evening I went to church to attend the meeting, this being my first visit. During the service I awoke to consciousness of my true being, because I was face to face with the truth. Each testimony given contained a statement of truth, but what in particular appealed to me was the passage from John, written on the wall, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." The realization of the meaning of that passage brought forth the thought that there is only one life, namely, that of Truth, and that everything outside of Truth is false, having no intelligence. My understanding of this relieved to some extent my mental suffering, so I left the church determined to find out more about Christian Science. Later I was introduced to some of the church people and they gave me a Bible and a copy of Science and Health. I studied these books and from the first was interested. The truth contained in them became more manifest to me as I progressed, and I also got a faint idea of the realities of life.

Two weeks after my first visit to the church I left Hawaii, but can never cease to appreciate the help I received from my new friends there. After coming aboard the boat and getting out to sea, the fear of being seasick came to me, as I had always been subject to this trouble and already felt the symptoms. I knew that Christian Science could help me, but I was a beginner and did not know how to employ it; however, I read Science and Health, which teaches that God is good and is Principle, All-in-all; that He is Life, Love, and Truth, and there is none besides Him; that He is unconscious of sin, sickness, and death, therefore we as His image and likeness can reflect only good. Through the realization of this truth the seasickness left me, proving the teachings of Christian Science to be true. Since then I have been in the hospital twice with influenza, but I attribute that to fear and to lack of understanding of Science. When a third epidemic broke out, I was able to protect myself.
