Extracts from Letters

"I have not yet thanked you for your very kind letter of the twelfth of January, and the inclosure; but this delay is perhaps just as well, as I have had time to send out copies of these to those interested in Egypt and the Sudan. You will be pleased to know how very encouraging these letters have been to us all and how deeply appreciative we are of the kindness which prompted you to write so fully. Many have sent in further donations, and by means of these and of a contribution of some nine pounds from our general fund I am enabled to inclose herewith a check for one hundred and twenty-five dollars on account of the War Relief fund. One contributor, on active service, writes in sending his donation: 'It is indeed gratifying to know that Christian Science is taking such an active part in looking after those who have suffered through the war. I must candidly confess that I was ignorant of the fact that the Christian Science church had taken up this relief work, and it is exceedingly pleasing to know that it has. Would you kindly put me down as a regular monthly contributor to your fund ...' As this indicates the general spirit of willing generosity on the part of friends out here, it is evident that the money, capably administrated as we know it is, must do a great deal more good than is indicated by its face value calculated in pounds, shillings, and pence."

"I found myself many a time in very disastrous financial conditions, not knowing how to satisfy my children's hunger, and you were ever ready to help me. I thank you, and thank you heartily, also all those Americans who contribute their money to help the needy in Italy. I shall ever be grateful to all."
