Following an acute attack of throat trouble which I had...

Following an acute attack of throat trouble which I had in my teens, I used to suffer from occasional deafness due to accumulations in the ears, which had to be removed by a doctor. After taking up the study of Christian Science I naturally had no desire to go to a doctor, and on one occasion considerable obstruction was removed through Christian Science treatment. At times I experienced a sense of deafness, but suffered no real inconvenience, and consequently gave very little definite thought to the subject until two years ago, when I found that the hearing on one side was getting less and less acute. On two separate occasions I asked for treatment, which was very lovingly given; but although much mental benefit was received, the sense of deafness had not lessened, in fact was increasing, and I knew there was more preparatory work for me to do in order to become receptive to the truth on this point.

For some months I worked on with apparently no result, the feeling of solid obstruction seeming to grow more pronounced, and then came acute pain which seemed quite alarming. I continued to pray for guidance to solve this problem, and one afternoon my eyes twice fell on the following words on page 420 of Science and Health: "If students do not readily heal themselves they should early call an experienced Christian Scientist to aid them." I promptly went to the telephone and rang up the experienced Christian Scientist who had previously helped me, feeling sure that this acute stage was only part of the working out of the problem, and that I was better prepared to listen for the voice of Truth than before. A loving response was immediately received, and although for the next few days the pain was at times severe, I was able to continue all of my regular work as usual.

One evening the pain seemed to make me incapable of thinking clearly, but I took up the textbook, and on page 490 I read, "Will-power is but a product of belief." A great sense of peace and relief from pain came over me, although I hardly realized what the words conveyed. Some great fear or belief in the power of evil had broken down, and I experienced a joyful calm. During the next two days the truth of Mrs. Eddy's teachings was proved to me, physically as well as mentally; but still there was no removal of socalled solid obstruction as I had anticipated, and the deafness remained the same. Two days later, however, I awoke feeling perfectly clear, and then for two days the hearing fluctuated, first clear and then clouded, so treatment was continued, and by the end of the week my hearing was perfect, and it has remained so.
