Lewiston (Idaho) Tribune

It is true that Mrs. Eddy founded a great religious movement, but her leadership, the result of her life work, does not deserve the appellation of "autocratic." Hers was a leadership of spiritual ideas, and not the personal domination of one human mind over another. She was the consistent exponent of God's government of man, and of man's sole allegiance to God, particularly including obedience to His commandments. No teaching so persistently advocates democracy in its truest sense as does Christian Science, recognizing as it does man's inalienable right of self-government. On page 106 of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Mrs. Eddy states as a part of a discussion of this subject, "Man is properly self-governed only when he is guided rightly and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love."
