The Lectures

A lecture on Christian Science, under the auspices of the Christian Science Society of Juneau, was delivered by Prof. Hermann S. Hering at the Empres Theater, which was filled to its capacity. Judge E. F. Medley, who introduced the lecturer, said:—

About the time "Looking Backward" was written, a woman, Mrs. Eddy, was teaching along new lines of religious thought, looking at the Bible with a fresher vision than the older theologians, and spreading the gospel of healing through right thinking and right living. To the ordinary person of that time Mrs. Eddy and her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" were far more visionary than Edward Bellamy and his "Looking Backward." Yet within a few short years Christian Science as taught by Mrs. Eddy has become a living, vital force to over a million people in the United States alone, while we are almost as far away as ever from the wonderful things which Bellamy predicted.

I am not a Christian Scientist, nor can I pretend to speak with authority upon the subject. Rather should I be numbered among the large majority of our citizens who, while essentially fair minded, have not, from a variety of reasons, sufficiently examined Christian Science either to accept it or to reject it. But we all must admit the remarkable progress the teachings of Mrs. Eddy have made, as shown by the spread of Christian Science all over the world. New things are looked upon askance by most of us. We are essentially conservative and prone to criticize those with courage enough to enunciate new truths; yet if what they speak is the truth, in the end they must prevail. Christ Jesus was crucified because he was looked upon as a radical by the people of his day. Lincoln won a martyr's crown because of his heroic espousal of abolition. Yet today slavery is an abomination in the minds of us all, and Christianity has revolutionized the world.
