About six years ago I was suddenly seized with spasmodic pain so intense that I wished it were all over with me. I had familiarized myself somewhat with the teachings of Christian Science, and therefore did not want my husband to call in a physician. When the pain grew less severe I tried to realize that life is spiritual, "neither in nor of matter" (Science and Health, p. 14), and presently there was a calm, and I slept several hours. From that day on I sought to go deeper into the study of the teachings of Christian Science, and whenever there was a recurrence of the above described condition I would quickly succeed in meeting it.

While visiting friends in Berlin in 1912, I woke up with dreadful pain on the night preceding my departure for home. This time I seemed unable to rise above the attack, and as I did not wish to disturb anybody, I waited till morning, and then asked my friends, who thought they should send for a physician, to wire to a Christian Science practitioner in Hannover for treatment. Two days after this, when I returned home, there was still an inner upheaval, but on the third day I was completely free. A stony substance had been expelled from the system, and since then I have had no return of the distressing condition. Many have been the instances in which I have experienced the workings of Truth. It is as the Bible says, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
