Our Periodicals

There is so much for which to give thanks after Christian Science has come into our lives, that one hardly knows where to begin. As a result, some of the less obvious blessings are apt to be overlooked, even belittled, unless we are reminded of them. But we must not forget to include the periodicals issued by The Christian Science Publishing Society. The writer has gained so much from their systematic perusal that it is a great pleasure for him to adopt this method of discharging a little of his debt of gratitude, by giving appreciative recognition where it is due.

Since the writer began to read the periodicals regularly, he has perused carefully all but half a dozen or so of the articles on Christian Science that have appeared in the Monitor, Sentinel and Journal. While all have not appealed to him, simply because they did not fall in with his train of thought, he has come across many articles, paragraphs, and sentences which have been of incalculable value to him for the reason that they have cleared away forever some fog that was obscuring his view of the truth. Consequently, he feels a thousandfold repaid for the time and effort expended in their study.

Those who through ignorance place no value on the periodicals, or who may allow themselves to be hindered from reading them for other insufficient reasons, do not know what they miss. The serious seeker for the truth finds it everywhere, although nothing can displace in his affections the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings, as these constitute the only authoritative standard whereby to judge of the writings of others. The shining light of Truth gleams through all work conscientiously performed, and through every word spoken or written from a right motive, no matter who the author may be. The onus lies on the hearer or reader to hear or read aright, that is, spiritually, instead of from the material standpoint. The word and deed of the Christian Scientist, be he ever so lowly, are entitled to consideration because of the fact that he has become "a better transparency for Truth" (Science and Health, p. 295). Truth is behind them and will bring him his reward.
